Is there any chance for MS Dhoni to be a head coach for Indian cricket team at 2023 World Cup?

Impossible.

MS Dhoni is currently 38 and 2023 world cup is still 3 years away. By then he would be 42. Wicketkeepers simply can’t play till that long - they will inevitably start facing back problems (which Dhoni has already started facing). Even super fit wicketkeepers like Gilchrist who has never missed a single test due to injury/fitness issues couldn’t continue beyond 36. If you look at wicketkeepers with long careers, none of them managed to continue till 40s - Boucher retired at 35, Gilchrist retired at 36, Sangakkara retired at 38.

So it’s impossible for MS Dhoni to continue till 2023 playing as keeper, The question is, can he play purely as a batsman and play till 2023 ?

Even if you ignore the fact that MS Dhoni is a keeper, very few cricketers manage to continue to play beyond 40s esp for strong teams like India or Australia - in recent past only Tendulkar managed to do that. With age, your reflexes slow down, you lose hand eye coordination, struggle to run between wickets and have only technique to bank upon. Dhoni has never been the among most ‘technically correct’ batsman. His batting is more about street smartness than technique. Indian top order is too crowded. Even if I assume that Shikhar Dhawan wont be there till 2023, still we have Rohit/Prithvi Shaw/Kohli/Shubman Gill/KL Rahul/Shreyas Iyer/Surya Kumar Yadav as candidates for top 4 and I dont see Dhoni fitting into the batting lineup at anything above no 5. Indian top order will most likely continue to score heavily and at no 5 you expect somebody who can play a cameo or who can run 2s at ease - already we can see that Dhoni doesnt have the ability to hit out immediately after coming to bat. At 41 years of age, he wont be a good runner between wickets either - remember the run out against NZ in world cup ? Young Dhoni would have dived and tried to prevent a run out. With increased emphasis for fitness, I dont see Dhoni playing for India at 42.
